Ogham is writing liberated from the fixed forms of the alphabet. It allows the human artifice of writing to reclaim something of the spontaneity of nature.

From the time of the Scholars’ Primer a certain ambiguity was felt to apply to the Ogham. Were the letter names the names of the scholars who had created it, or were they the names of trees? Some claimed the former, while others (says the Primer) “say that it is not from men at all that the Ogham vowels are named in Gaelic but from trees…” Moreover, the fact that ‘fid‘ means both letter and tree, meant that a similar ambiguity applied to the ‘woods‘ themselves: “As to fedha, wood vowels…two kinds are reckoned of them, to wit, artificial tree and natural tree. Artificial tree, i.e. the tree of the Ogham; and natural tree, the tree of the forest”. (Although these statements apply specifically to the vowels, much the same thing can be taken as applying to the consonants, too). It was also claimed for the Ogham that it was a more advanced conception than the alphabets that preceded it, and I believe that the following indicates that this is indeed the case.

Ogham restores the flow interrupted by the analytical process leading to the creation of alphabets.

As Damian McManus in his ‘Guide to Ogam’ points out, the alphabetic principle is ‘not an invention in itself’ but the end result of a prolonged analytical process whereby language was reduced first to individual words isolated from the flow of speech, then to the syllabic components of those words, then to the component sounds of the syllables. First words, then syllables, then the individual sounds, came to be designated by a diminishing series of agreed signs.

The Ogham, far from being a simple and primitive device, represents a further step along this road. Behind it lies an alphabet, generally assumed by scholars to be the Latin alphabet, although Greek and Runic alphabets have also been proposed. But it takes the signs or letters of that alphabet and reduces them further by making their form irrelevant. We are left with marks, the significance of which lies not in their shape or form, but rather in their relative position, and in their number: the relative position and number of the marks identifying the sound, in any given case, by reference to an agreed sequence that lies in the background.

“The characters of the Ogam signary are not alphabetic graphemes;” says McManus, they are integral parts of a linear code…clearly unconnected in its origin with alphabetic writing.”

The marks made “right of, left of, athwart, across and around the stem” serve as positional markers that refer to a fixed but unmanifest order of sounds, like a musical scale apprehended through a melody. The fragmented and static nature of the alphabet is replaced by something more akin to the pulse and flow of the hands of a drummer expressed in graphic form.

The fragmented alphabet is exchanged for a signary that can also be compared to the organic growth of plants. In this sense the Ogham is most definitely a tree alphabet (and “Ogam is climbed like a tree” says the Scholars’ Primer) even if not all the letter names were originally the names of trees.

Once again, the complex multiple signary of the alphabet dissolves to give way to a system that abandons form in favour of position relative to the stem or line of expression. The characters can take ANY form, potentially, because it is not their form but their number and position that matters. This leaves the dimension of form free to be employed aesthetically, imaginatively, expressively. A calligrapher, of course, can make imaginative use of the alphabet, but is bound by the need to keep the form of the letters recognisable. This does not apply to the Ogham.

Once it is grasped that orientation and number are the governing factors, rather than the specific form or appearance of the marks, then the writing process is allowed to imitate the creative diversity of form within nature. I have tried to give some expression to some small aspect of this in the ‘cursive Ogham’ illustrations that I’ve posted in this tribe’s album.

This creative potential of the Ogham is already adumbrated in the variety of forms set out in the Book of Ballymote, a variety sometimes dismissed by desiccated scholars as a puerile exercise in doodling. But the full creative potential of the Ogham has not, it seems to me, as yet been clearly realised or fully exploited.

I would like to find answers to the following questions, which I think might occur to anyone trying to take an intelligent interest in the Ogham and its associated trees:

1. What is the earliest traceable reference to an association between specific types of tree (Birch, Rowan, Alder or whatever) and the characters of the Ogham (right of stem, left of stem, athwart stem etc.)?

2. What is the earliest known actual list of these associated trees?
Such a list does not appear in the core or 'canonical' element in The Scholars' Primer, as identified by Anders Ahlqvist (see the thread 'The Scholars' Primer and the Ogham'). The list would therefore seem to form part of the later commentaries on the Primer. So when was it introduced and by whom?

3. How did the Ogham tree list as we know it today evolve, and why does it include trees that are not indigenous to Ireland, where the Ogham and the tree list are assumed to have originated?
Silver Fir (Abies alba) is native to central Europe.
The Vine is native to Asia Minor (although of course cultivated everywhere where the climate allows).
The White Poplar (Populus alba) is indigenous to central and southern Europe and parts of Asia; it is POSSIBLY indigenous to parts of the British Isles.

4. Are Calder's translations of the words in the tree lists in the Scholars' Primer accurate in the light of more recent scholarship?

If anyone knows of any sources of information on these or any related points, I'd be most grateful to hear from them.

I thought the following might be of interest to anyone patient enough to read my ramblings! I would welcome any comments, particularly from anyone more knowledegable than myself in these matters, as I'm a very amateur sort of scholar.

THE SCHOLARS' PRIMER
This work is important as it contains, so far as I know, the first historical reference to the association between the ogham and the set of trees -Silver Birch, Rowan, Alder etc - with which we are familiar.

The full title of the work, in the edition edited by George Calder and first published in Edinburgh in 1917 (as reprinted by Four Courts Press, Dublin, in 1995) is:

"Auraicept na n-Eces; The Scholars’ Primer: Being the texts of the Ogham tract from the Book of Ballymote and the Yellow Book of Lecan, and the text of the Trefhocul from the Book of Leinster."

The Book of Ballymote dates from 1391; The Yellow Book of Lecan was written between 1391 and 1401; and the Book of Leinster was compiled around 1160. In ‘The Scholars’ Primer’ George Calder collates the most important texts, which constitute an Irish grammatical and poetic treatise, the earliest parts of which are thought to date back to the 7th century CE. I assume that these texts were all copied manually, and on the whole the work is thought to date to the 12th century. According to Calder, the language is Middle Irish, but its basis belongs to the Old Irish period, and it owes much to the Latin grammarians. Ireland was apparently something of a haven for scholars fleeing various political and religious troubles on the Continent, which brought Irish scholarship to a very high point at an exceptionally early period.

THE LEGENDARY ORIGINS OF OGHAM: THE BIBLICAL ACCOUNT
There is, so far as I know, little or no trace of the Ogham prior to the 4th century CE. But ‘absence of evidence is not evidence of absence’, and the Primer states that the earliest inscriptions were on Birch wood. If their function at that stage was not commemorative or monumental, but served a more temporary purpose, they may not have survived.

The Primer itself contains two principal accounts of the origins of Ogham. The first relates the matter to Biblical history. After the fall of the Tower of Babel and the confusion of tongues, one Fenius Farsaidh, said to be of Scythian origin, sent 72 scholars to study the 72 languages which were then, according to this legendary history, in existence. From the 72 languages Fenius then selected ‘the Select Language‘, the language of the Irish, which was called Gaelic because the process was said to have been instigated by someone called Goedel, Gaoidel or Gaedel, after whom Gaelic and the Gael were named. “What was best accordingly of every language and what was widest and finest was selected for Gaelic…to wit, the one language that was more beautiful and excellent than any language...because it was selected from every language, and for every obscure sound of every language a place was found in Gaelic owing to its comprehensiveness beyond every speech.”

These claims are obviously exaggerated, and are evidently part of an effort to promote the Gaelic language as a worthy subject of study, rather than just a provincial curiosity.

The Ogham is also said to have been invented or 'discovered' at this time. Moreover, “for every sound for which no characters were found in all the other alphabets, characters were found for them in the Bethe Luis Nin of the Ogham.” Both the Irish language and the Ogham script are upheld in the Primer for their comprehensive modernity. “More definite than the Latin alphabet is this, to wit, the Beithe Luis Nin of the Ogham for it was invented last.” Its characters were named after the 25 noblest of the 72 scholars employed by Fenius. Alternatively, says the text, they were named after trees, “though some of these trees are not known today”.

THE TREES LISTED IN THE PRIMER
The text then goes on to list the trees, namely:

B: Beithe the Birch
L: Luis the Mountain Ash
F: Fern the Alder
S: Sail the Willow
N: Nin the Ash

H: Huath or Uath the Whitethorn
D: Duir the Oak
T: Tinne the Holly
C: Coll the Hazel
Q: Queirt the Apple

M: Muin the Vine
G: Gort the Ivy
nG: Ngetal the Broom, or Fern
STR: Straiph the Blackthorn
R: Ruis the Elder

A: Ailm, the Fir or Pine
O: Onn the Furze
U: Ur the Heath
E: Edhadh the Aspen
I: Ido the Yew

And the additional letters, sounds, or dipthongs:
EA: Ebhadh (also) the Aspen
OI: Oir the Spindle, or Ivy
UI or Y: Uilleand the Honeysuckle
IO or P: Iphin the Gooseberry or Thorn

WHAT IS 'EMANCOLL'?
Later, Emancoll is mentioned. This Calder translates as ‘Witch-hazel’. However, the Witch-hazel as we generally understand the term today is a tree native to North America and East Asia, and it seems unlikely that this is what was meant. Apparently ‘Wych-hazel’ is another name for ‘Wych-elm’, which is a species native to the British Isles, so this may be the correct tree. The letter stands for AE, or otherwise for double C, or X (which is seen as two Cs back to back, one reversed). ‘Coll’ is C, ‘Emancoll’ is double C, ‘eman’ evidently meaning ‘doubled’. As ‘Coll’ means Hazel, so it also seems possible that some variety of Hazel is the proper tree. (Wych/Witch in this context does not refer to witches the people, but to pliable branches such as coppiced Hazel trees produce).

NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL 'WOODS'
“Now all these are wood names,” says the text, “such as are found in the Ogham Books of Woods, and are not derived from men“ [i.e. from the names of the scholars]…for it was “from the trees of the forest that names were given to the ogham letters metaphorically“. There are thus ‘artificial trees’, or ‘artificial wood’ on the one hand, and ‘natural trees’, or ’natural wood’ on the other, the former being the trees of the forest, and the latter the trees, or characters, of the Ogham. Moreover, the genus ‘wood/letter’ has three species, namely:
Principal wood: the vowels
Cross wood: the diphthongs
Side woods: consonants.

While there are a number of Oghams mentioned: birds, cattle, arms, rivers etc. it is evident from the text that trees have a priviledged position, due to the fact that the term 'wood' can apply both a tree and a character. This sets up a fascinating juxtaposition of natural and artificial, wilderness and civilisation. All the attributions would seem to have an alliterative basis.

THE LEGENDARY ORIGINS OF OGHAM: IRISH MYTHOLOGY
But back to the legendary origins of the Ogham. According to the first account, the Ogham was brought into Ireland from the Middle East, where, as I mentioned above, it was said to have been invented or discovered by Fenius Farsaidh after the fall of the Tower of Babel. According to the second account, however, it was invented in Ireland by Ogma, brother of Bres mac Elathan, the King. Bres was a King of the Tuatha De Danann, although his father was a Fomorian. In a rather obscure passage, the Primer states that ‘sound and matter were the father and mother of the Ogham’. Sound was its mother, because it was named after Ogma; matter was its mother, because the word was also derived from og-uaim, meaning “perfect alliteration…which the poets applied to poetry by means of it”, and also because “the hand or knife of Ogma” was the means of its inscription.

The Tuatha were of course a legendary divine people, but if an equally legendary date is to be put to the origins of the Ogham, this means that it was at some time prior to 900 BCE, when Ollamh Fodhla, of Milesian pedigree, is supposed to have become king, by which time the Milesians had already supplanted the Tuatha. If there is any sort of historical truth in the story of the Tower of Babel, then it was probably a Babylonian ziggurat, destroyed when Sennacherib sacked the city in 689 BCE.

A MORE DISTANT HISTORICAL ORIGIN?
Apparently, if we look for a place where the trees and plants mentioned in the Ogham tree count are truly indigenous, that place would be in central Europe, somewhere between the sources of the Rhine and the Danube. This is the place where Celtic culture is supposed to have had its origins. This suggests that possibly the Ogham may have had its distant origins in this area, or else the that bards and scholars working in Ireland were not taking a narrowly insular view when they compiled their list.

THE VARIANT TREE ATTRIBUTIONS WITHIN THE PRIMER
While the Primer is reasonably consistent in its attribution of the various trees to the characters, there are some variations as follows:
B: Invariably Birch
L: Rowan in the majority of instances; Elm also mentioned.
F: Invariably Alder
S: Invariably Willow
N: Ash in the majority of instances; Nettles also mentioned.

H: Hawthorn in the majority of instances; Test Tree also mentioned.
D: Invariably Oak
T: Holly in the majority of instances; Elderberry also mentioned.
C: Invariably Hazel
Q: Apple in the majority of instances; Rowan, Aspen and Holly also mentioned.

M: Invariably Vine
G: Ivy in the majority of instances; Fir and Corn(field) also mentioned.
nG: Broom in the majority of instances; Fern also mentioned.
STR: Blackthorn in the majority of instances; Willowbrake also mentioned.
R: Elder in the majority of instances; Rose (?) also mentioned.

A: Fir or Pine
O: Furze (Gorse) in the majority of instances; Ash also mentioned.
U: Heath(er) in the majority of instances; Thorn also mentioned.
E: Aspen in the majority of instances; Yew and Test Tree also mentioned.
I: Yew in the majority of instances; Service Tree also mentioned.

EA: Aspen in the majority of instances; Elecampane and Woodbine also mentioned.
OI: Spindle in the majority of instances; Ivy and Heath also mentioned.
UI: Honeysuckle in the majority of instances; Ivy also mentioned.
IO/P: Gooseberry in the majority of instances; Thorn and Pine (for P) also mentioned.
AE/CC/X: Witchhazel (An unlikely translation, as mentioned above; so Wych Elm; or perhaps some variety of common Hazel; ‘Doubled Hazel‘).

This is something I wrote back in october of 2005 and wished to share with this lovely group here on tribe:

The words/poem below comes from Dr. W.Strokes translations of the twelfth century Book of Leinster. This seems to be an exchange between two bards, or perhaps two sages gifted in the art of poetry. This bit I have taken from a long passage where Feircheirndne seems to be challenging the right a younger man (perhaps even a newcomer, or a bard of lower rank?) known as Neidhe and whether he has theright to sit in the chair of the poet. This stood out to me...

"... And you, O knowledgeable lad, whose son are you?"

Neidhe answered,
"Not hard: I am the son of poetry,
Poetry son of scrutiny,
Scrutiny son of meditation,
Meditation son of lore,
Lore son of enquiry,
Enquiry son of investigation,
Investigation son of great knowledge,
Great Knowledge son of great sense,
Great Sense son of understanding
Understanding son of wisdom,
Wisdom son of the triple gods of poetry."

Those words got me thinking and this is the product from some of that thinking:

The Irish God Oghma is associated with wisdom, eloquence and strength. It is from this God that Ogham gets it's name. Ogmios is the Gaulish name for what seems to be the same God. Some believe it was Oghma who gave us the Oghams where other scholars believe that the Oghams only later became associated with this particular deity. My previous studies had led me to believe that Ogham was originally an alphabet with many connotations for each letter (Bards were said to have had to learn over 150 Ogham connotations, many of which are now lost to us). However, there seems to be some recent scholarly debate as to weather Ogham was originally a very poetic and symbolic language (an alphabet second) used by learned people (such as the druids) to ask and answer questions, or speak in a manner where the average listener would not understand what was being said. This might relate to why there are so many meanings to the Oghams- not just the trees the alphabet is primarily associated with- as well as it's importance in the teachings of the bardic class of druidry.

I have also read that Ogham may have been used as a secret sign language. The notches of each letter go from the right of stem, left of the stem, athwart of stem, through stem and about stem [italics taken from an passage from either the Book of Ballymote, or The Scholar's Primer]. By using parts of the body (shin, nose, foot, palm) as the stem, and the five fingers as the notches, it was believed one could use this as a form to communicate. If this were true, I could only see it as being used in very specific situations where one (for whatever reasons) would not be able to use spoken or written word.

So, what are you ideas, thoughts and opinions?

"Old News examines discoveries over the past 25 years that indicate Plains Indians had visitors from the far side of the Atlantic a thousand years before Columbus sailed from Iberia. More than a half dozen archaeoastronomical panels are documented with timelapse film and videography on the equinoxes, the summer solstice and Lughnasad. Only after translations of the associated grooved writings were these solar alignments first observed. We examine the nature of Irish Ogham and how it compares to the consonantal variety found in America, show the sort of explosive reaction this subject ignites among American archaeologists, follow a researcher as he applies his nuclear chemical analysis to dating some Ogham rock writings, propose that these foreigners may have worshipped Mithras revealed by their layered iconography and specific Indo-European star charts detailing Mithras' regulation of orderly celestial cycles, discuss the humanity of these powerful discoveries, and conclude with a postscript suggesting an even earlier expedition from a seaport on the southern coast of the Arabian peninsula based on the unique Dhofari alphabet found on other heavily patinated rocks in America's heartland."

"Big news recently: a national/worldwide feature news story produced by a worldwide news organization (CNN) was supportive of Wiccans/Pagans based on freedom of religion. With this increased exposure, our community’s voice is now growing in the national forum of public debate. ~Witchvox~"

This is a major issue to me as I have many Pagan friends who served this country not only because they love it but because they also were following their deep rooted belief in the Pagan Warrior spiritual way and the VA is literally spitting on them & our President is sending out a clear message that Pagans who serve their country under his command bravely are not worth that recognition in his eyes since they aren't real citizens cause only God Fearing Americans count.

Veteran Pentacle Quest Makes CNN Article:
http://www.witchvox.com/va/dt_va.html?a=usoh&c=military&id=10987

PS.
Though this deals with mainly the Pentacle most of my Pagan friends who have or are serving in the American Arms Services are Druidic. I think the Druidic community should start now pushing for the /|\ symbol to be recognized by the VA as Druidism is fast catching up with its little sister Wicca as one of the fastest growing Pagan Traditions in America.

Greetings!
I'm PdxDruid. I want to invite you all to a really awesome 3D chat
messenger. I have alot of Pagan friends there & been drawing many
from other areas on the Net to there. I'm hoping to create a really
strong Pagan presence there. When you join through my link you will
automatically be added to my Buddy list. This will help you find other
Pagans here as almost every single person in my Buddy list is Pagan of one
flavor or another. Heres a run down of how to earn credits here to buy stuff.
When you join they start you off with a 1,000 credits (Credits is our virtual currency).
The main ways to earn credits is to invite folks. When someone first accepts
a invite from you, you earn 500 credits then another 500 credits when they have their
first chat. They give you credit when they hit their 5th chat and others too
but I haven't kept up on how many. LOL Anyway if they buy their name ($7.95)
you get 2,500 credits. NOTE: You don't need to buy your name if you don't want to.
If you don't then you just end up stuck with the word Guest in front of your name.
Alot of folks have guest in front of their name & been here since the beginning.
Also Guest have little ads on there homepage. No biggy. The benefits of buying
your name is it drops the Guest from name, drops the ads from your homepage.
Allows you to download the Developer program & become a
Developer and design & sell clothes & other stuff in the catalog and
a few other things I haven't really learned yet. But mainly unless you
want to be a Developer you don't need to buy your name unless you don't
like Guest in front of your name. One of my friends I invited husband
bought her the full adult access pass & I got 10,000 credits. Adult
Access allows you to buy adult mature stuff like nudity skins and stuff.
So unless you like doing rituals online Skyclad or (LOL) a real flirt
you don't need it. LOL You can buy credits but unless you are loaded
why bother? You can earn plenty just by inviting folks and its a great
way to make friends as well. Speaking of Rituals online. No one is
doing this yet here & one of my good friends is a Developer & I'm
learning to be a Developer. Me & her are working on creating ritual
scenes/themes so folks can do ritual online. Great for those who are
in secluded places or don't have other Pagans in their area to work
with and like to even if it is online, experience ritual with others.
I have a Stonehenge Theme that has a Ritual/council like lodge & hold
little workshop discussions within it. Its a great little lodge to do
Druidic 101 or Wicca 101 classes in also. I also have a Redwoods Theme
and I just did a cyber handfasting in it for 2 and that was kinda cool.
Their Avatars were all dressed up for it & mine wore its celtic robe
and deer antlers on his head (This avatar is temporarly down and I'm
using my PdxDruid one). LOL There are alot of cool Pagan themes
already but they are mainly Pagan social themes. Like the Wiccan
Retreat Cafe & the Goddess Cabin. 2 of my favorite. The first time I
chat with you its in the Cafe. The Cafe can seat like 12 people so its
kinda cool though its still in Beta and can usually only get 3 avatars
to appear in it though I did have up to 7 Avatars in there once. They
are busy working out the kinks though and many I have invited love it
enough they willing to deal with the little quirks. LOL Anyway when
you join and I'm on I spend my first chat with you teaching you how
to control your Avatar and to get to know you then set you loose to
have fun and explore. If I'm not online when you join just click Chat
now & someone will pop up and help you. If you get a newbie learn what
you can then say thank you and try Chat now again till you get someone
whose gotten good at it.
You can also click my homepage in your Buddy list & there you will
fine my buddy list and it will show you who is online (this is great
if you perfer to have a fellow Pagan help you rather than a random
person in the Chat now mode). Click their pict then it will take you
to their page. You can leave a message (If its a question make them
private so their page don't get flooded with questions) or click there
homepage pict & it will launch a chat with them. Let them know I
invited you & they will help you learn how to use your Avatar. Once
you learn to use your Avatar start inviting your Pagan Friends and
earn shopping credits & have fun. Hope to see you there! Below is the
link. http://www.imvu.com/catalog/web_registration.php?userId=1547889

cool tribe you got here cornflower!

it's my understanding that the main aspect of the ogham was actually a count of twenty. added to this was also a set of five other runes with a separate tho perhaps more ancient origin.

the interesting thing is that this clearly corresponds to the count of twenty used by the maya.

on the old tortuga.com message board Calahun Imix posted this:

>>Perhaps the Celts made their way to the Mayan lands for when we examine the 20 solar shields and compare the mayan icons with the 20 trees of the Ogham alphabet and then throw in the 20 coresponding Ogham Birds we find some connections that defy easy explanation.

1. Imix not only nurtures birth but it also nurtures BIRCH the Pheasant is its bird.

2. Ik often thought to be one of the forms of Quetzalcoatl as Ehecatl the wind god is sometimes thought to be a duck. the ROWAN is the tree and the bird ogham oddly enough is the duck.

3. Akbal is to ALDER and the Gull is the bird.

4. Kan is to WILLOW and Hawk is the bird.

5. Chicchan is to ASH and the Snipe is the bird. Often the world tree is an Ash and I would not be surprised to find a Serpent on that tree.

6.Cimi gets the HAWTHORN tree and the Nightcrow is the Bird.

7. Manik is alligned with the OAK and the Wren is the bird.

8. Lamat where our eybrows should raise for we find the HOLLY tree and unbelievably the Starling is the Bird.

9. Muluc gets the HAZEL and the Crane is the bag ....imean bird.

10. Oc barks up an APPLE tree and the Hen is the bird.

11. Chuen gets the BRAMBLE and somehow the Titmouse seems appropriate for Venus.

12. Eb gets the IVY tree and the bird is the Mute Swan.

13. Ben gets the REED and the Goose is the bird. Now most of us Know that reed is another name for Sky-walker.

14. Ix gets the BLACKTHORN and the Thrush is the bird.

15. Men is to ELDER and the Rook is the bird.

16. Cib and the ELM the Lapwing is the bird.

17.Caban and GORSE the Cormorant is the bird.

18. Etznab gets the HEATHER tree and the Skylark is the bird.

19. Cauac gets the ASPEN and the Whistling-Swan is the bird.

20. Ahau ends the sequence YEW is the tree and the bird is the Eaglet.

I hope more connections are discovered and shared. The two cultures are so similar in
their respect for animals and use of a 13 moon calendar. The Celtic
Beth-Luis-Nion Calendar even has a day out of time called the nameless day
Dec 23. that is when our sun is conjunct the Galactic Center.<<
